Theory classes

Music theory teaches pupils the language of music

In our classes children will learn about notation, key signatures, time signatures and rhythmic notation. At intermediate and advanced levels pupils cover a broader range of topics such as composition, harmony and counterpoints.


Our theory classes are held in small, relaxed groups at our Music School to help develop your son/daughter’s understanding of music. Thirty minute classes are available during time time on:

  • Monday          6.50pm -  7.50pm

  • Tuesday          4.00pm -  5.00pm

  • Wednesday    4.30pm -  7.30pm

  • Saturday         9.00am - 11.00am

Fees for a 30 minutes class:

  • ​Price for students already at Music School:
    £40.50 / £28.50 low income*

  • Price for students not at Music School
    £51 / £43.50 low income*

* Proof of low income is required to qualify for subsidised fees. Please show original copies of housing benefit or reduced Council Tax letter to the Music Service office.

Grade 6+ ABRSM exams
Pupils taking Grade 6 or higher ABRSM exams must already have passed ABRSM Grade 5 (or above) in Music Theory. Our theory classes can support pupils in preparing for both their theory and practical exams.

  2. We'll confirm which classes have space

  3. To secure your space pay your fees online before attending the first class

  4. Complete and return a Music School Registration form either before the class, or when your child arrives for their first class
