Free taster music lesson

FREE online taster music lessons for children in Waltham Forest

Update: Registration for the taster lessons has now closed. Lesson details will be sent to applicants by email before 4th July.

We're very excited to offer taster 1-2-1 instrumental and vocal music lessons using Zoom in July absolutely free of charge!!

When?
Lessons will take place between Monday 6th July to Saturday 11th July. Lessons are available during the daytime and early evening.

How long is the lesson?
The lesson will be 15 minutes long, with a few minutes at the end to ask any questions.

Who are lessons for?
Lessons are available for any young person aged 7 to 17 years in Waltham Forest who is interested in playing a new instrument OR who may already play an instrument or sing. It’s a great chance to try out how an online music lesson works using zoom for complete beginners or more experienced young musicians.

Can I have a taster lesson if I already have zoom lessons with Waltham Forest Music Service?
Taster lessons are for available for children who have not already signed up for zoom lessons with us this term.

What will happen in the trial lesson?

One of our music tutors will introduce you to their musical instrument or singing voice and some of the techniques needed to play or sing. They’ll include some fun musical exercises to join in with during the lesson, either with or without an instrument. They’ll play some music for you and give you some examples of music to listen to at home later if you want to. At the end of the lesson you can ask any questions about learning the instrument and/or taking online lessons at our Virtual Music School in September.

Does a parent/carer need to be present during the lesson?
A parent/carer is welcome to watch part or all of the lesson. A parent/carer must be available to greet the teacher at the start and end of lesson and must be in earshot during the lesson in case any support is needed (for example with internet connection issues).

Do I need a musical instrument for the lesson?
You don’t need a musical instrument to take part in a trial lesson. If you do have an instrument, then please do bring it along to show the tutor for further advice.

What musical instruments are available?
You can select from: piano/keyboard, violin, viola, cello, recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drum kit, guitar, ukulele or voice.

How do I decide which instrument to choose for the lesson?

If you haven’t played an instrument before, think about what type of music you like to listen to and which instruments you like the sound of. You could also have a look online to find out a bit more, these websites have introductions to the instrument families:  https://philharmonia.co.uk/resources/instruments/ https://www.yamaha.com/en/musical_instrument_guide/

How will I join the lesson online using zoom?
We will email you instructions on how to use zoom and join the online taster lesson. We would recommend using a device with a larger screen such as a laptop or tablet, but a phone is also fine.

When will I receive details of the online lesson?

We will notify you of your lesson day and time by email before Friday 3rd July. If you are unable to attend at the time and day given we won’t be able to offer a different time, so please check your diary and tell us your availability when you sign up.

What happens after the taster lesson?
We’ll send you some information about music lessons and courses taking place in the Autumn term. There is no obligation to sign up.

How do I sign up for a taster lesson?

Applications closed on Tuesday 30th June. Please note places are limited and will be allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis.
